Julie's Haircut with Philip Corner: Follow Fluxus

We’ve been graced by Philip Corner’s (and his inseparable partner in art-as-life Phoebe Neville’s) friendship for a long time now. A true newyorker by birth, Philip has been living in Reggio Emilia for ages and since we’ve met him he’s always showed a deep curiosity about our music, our own way to reinterpret the old rock’n’roll canon. Being the adventurous composer that he is, he surprised us with his wish to collaborate in bringing some of his compositions to a totally new soundscape, provided by our trademark electro-acoustic weaponry. The occasion came when, in 2012, Palazzo Magnani installed a thorough exhibition dedicated to the Fluxus movement, which Philip had been a prominent member of. We went into the studio at the Barchessa Bolivar (r.i.p.) in Rubiera to cut two pieces of music under his direction. Our usual line-up was expanded with the addition of Simona “Fluxsimona” Borrillo on vocals, our founding member Laura Storchi on organ and Andrea Faccioli on guitar. One of these pieces - “One Note More Than Once” -  was then mixed in 5.1 surround sound to be played in the hall of Palazzo Magnani during the exhibit. On the opening night, we assembled again under Philip’s direction on the street outside Palazzo Magnani to perform “My Favorite tune” and “Rock - A near elemental”, again with Simona Borrillo, plus Deborah Walker on cello and Amedeo Perri on synthesizer.
Almost a decade later, these recordings see the light of day in a CD release for Setola di Maiale, a place of joy for unconventional music.

We have some copies of the CD at our store.

The digital version of the album is available through our own label Superlove on all streaming services and Bandcamp.

Sun Forest - Transitions

We're glad to introduce yet another project from our own man Nicola Caleffi:

As the year continues and summer rolls on to a close, we are pleased to welcome SUN FOREST to the Golden Ratio Frequencies family.

SUN FOREST is the solo project of Nicola Caleffi. More known for his work with the prolific Italian neo psychedelic band Julie’s Haircut (Rocket Recordings) TRANSITIONS, his debut under the moniker, finds Caleffi in an altogether more subtle, yet just as mind expanding form.

Across two longform pieces, Caleffi takes us on a buoyant journey through pulsing polyrhythms, ethereal synth sweeps and vibrant tonal colours.

Recorded, mixed and mastered to analog tape for ultra warm tone, and taking inspiration from a wide scope of influences such as Eno’s Discreet Music, Arthur Russel’s Reach One, the ecstatic polyrhythms of Terry Riley and the sonorous vibrations of Spacemen 3, Caleffi brings us two pieces filled with both harmonic variations and melodic structures, both anchored by a meditational, grounding yet uplifting spirit.

Taking up the A side, Emerald Days, named from the Buddhist’s praise of the Emerald stone as one of its seven spiritual jewels, massages ones core with minimal yet rejuvenating Rhodes piano and synth work anchored by a steady yet evolving heart-beat pulse, it’s 23 minutes acting as a meditative primer for the B side, Register of Light, an energising flight through soaring Tangerine Dream like sequences that propel the listener into an ecstatic aural voyage of momentum and motion.

The two side long pieces that adorn TRANSITIONS are full of hope and promise, the ever evolving elements within the tracks reflecting Transitions through out; their digital to analog creation process, inner being to outward journeys, stillness to movement, Summer to Autumn, darkness to light, and all willing, our collective transition from recent chaotic events and mind states into a brighter, more conscious and expanded way of being. Wishful thinking perhaps, but TRANSITIONS 45 mins gives us a window of hope at least, and at best, the inspiration to take flight and make it so.

Physical copies are available on high quality pro-dubbed C45 cassette tape with full colour 4 page panel inlay and silk-screened acetate Golden Ratio Spiral.

Pre-orders available August 20th, full release and shipping begins Sept 10th.  creditsreleases September 10, 2021

Taotie Remix by Pumajaw Out Now

In his creative reworking of Julie’s Haircut’s Taotie - a song from their 2013 album Ashram Equinox - former Loop member John Wills, now Pumajaw, reshapes the original etno-electronic feel of the track into a brand new form, with an emphasis on the futuristic drive that puts this version on a whole new level: while mantaining the distinctive elements of the piece - the hypnotic synth arpeggio, the ghostly vocals, the otherworldly guitars - Wills’ version of Taotie rebrands the track as if it were transported from its desert-like environment to a shiny, high tech world. The remix is now available at our Bandcamp (if you buy it on the day of release August 6th, Bandcamp will waiver its fees to support the band) and on all streaming services.
